Across Australia, people organise themselves around sport, recreation, culture, service, tradition and shared interests.

Clubland is a long-term photographic project documenting the people, places, rituals and everyday activities through which these clubs create their own communities.

From suburban clubrooms and sporting fields to specialist societies and less visible subcultures, it looks at the variety of worlds wherever people choose to belong.

These worlds can appear permanent: familiar faces, committee rooms, honour boards, uniforms, bars, trophies, greens, routines and traditions.

But they are not.

Membership changes.

Buildings are altered or disappear.

Rituals fade.

Institutions merge, decline or vanish.

Clubland records these temporary arrangements of human belonging while they are still being lived.

Taken collectively, these clubs reveal something larger about Australian life: how people create communities around shared interests, traditions and places.
